  Chapter 1

Ann rubbed her eyes and glanced at her alarm clock. Realizing that she was late for her meeting, she ran her fingers through her hair, threw on a dress she found lying on the floor, grabbed her purse, and ran out of the door.

As Ann walked down the street, she caught a glance of herself in a reflection of a store window. She was incredibly grateful to have been blessed with a perfectly trim figure that most girls run their asses off to get. Ann was incredibly gorgeous, and she was well aware of it; the daily stares and whistles that men threw at her while she walked down the street was a constant reminder that she was beautiful.

While Ann neared the entrance to her workplace, a small cluster of men rushed to grab the door for her. Completely ignoring their act of kindness, Ann walked through the door with a flip of her hair. Just before she entered the elevator, her phone rang. Digging through her handbag, Ann’s heart sunk when she recognized the number. It was her friend Jennifer.

  “Hello?”

“Ann, I’m so sorry to call you at work. I just needed someone that I could count on,” Jennifer sobbed through the phone.

“Jen, it’s okay. I promised you that I would always be here for you. What’s going on? Are you all right?” Ann grew increasingly worried as a few moments of silence passed between the two friends.

“It’s just getting bad again, Ann. Last night, he sent me to the ER again. He pushed me down a flight of stairs and now I have a concussion. I’m so scared, Ann. I don’t know what to do. I know if I ever try to leave, he’ll hunt me down and leave me for dead,” Jen whispered through the phone receiver.

Ann was incredibly anxious. She had to be at her meeting ten minutes ago, but she knew that her friend needed her. The meeting could wait. Pacing back and forth, Ann began to contemplate her options on how she could help Jennifer.

“Is he home now?” Ann questioned.

“No, and he’s not going to be for a few days. He just got another load of cargo to drive to Ohio.”

Thanking the universe that Jen’s husband was an over-the-road truck driver, Ann commanded Jennifer to gather her belongings and head over to Ann’s apartment for the day.

“You’ll be safe there, I promise. There is no way that he can get in, not with the security systems that I have in place. If you get hungry, my credit card is on my nightstand. You can order whatever you want. And don’t you dare stress about paying me back. I’ve got to go now, hun. Everything is going to be okay, I promise. I’ll see you at home tonight.”

Ann got off of the phone and got into the elevator. She had no idea how she was going to make it through the day; the morning had already been stressful enough. Digging through her purse, Ann lit a cigarette in the elevator. One of the men in the elevator cleared his throat.

“Excuse me, miss, but you’re not allowed to smoke in here.”

Looking down at the man’s shirt, Ann saw that the man worked for the building.

With the cigarette in hand, Ann took a step toward the man.

“Honey, I own this building. I own you and your paycheck. I can do whatever the hell I want.” Ann retorted while looking the man up and down.

Taking a step back to stand in her original spot, Ann’s mind became clouded with worry for her friend. That worry quickly took the back place in her mind as the elevator doors opened. It was time for business.

  Chapter 2

Ann stepped into a room filled with men of all different types; men who were alluring and other men who bored Ann at the site of their choice of clothing. As soon as she stepped into the room, all eyes were on her beautiful red hair and developed figure. She knew that she could have any one of these men at her choosing, but none of the men attracted Ann. The men stood for Ann, out of respect. Throwing her handbag down on the table, Ann tied her hair back into a ponytail and adjusted her dress.

  “Is everybody here?” Ann asked.

A man to the left of her shook his head. “We’re still waiting for one more person.”

  “And who is that?”

“JFL, our competitor. You do know what this meeting is about, right Miss. Richard? This isn’t a monthly budget meeting,” the man said while glancing down at her budget notes. “This is to discuss the offer that JFL has delivered to us.”

Ann nodded her head after the man had finished speaking. Of course! How could she be so forgetful? Pulling out a mirror from her purse, Ann carefully applied lipstick. Right as she was finishing up, a man walked through the door.

“Hello, I’m Justin from Just Find Love. I’m here to discuss the deal that my company offered to you,”

Ann looked up at the man who was talking and felt her breathing stop. She had never seen a man more intriguing than this one. He was incredibly handsome, and Ann wanted to stare at him for days. Realizing that she was in a trance, Ann nodded her head and asked, “I’m sorry. What did you say your name was?”

  “Justin. I work for JFL.”

“Hello, Justin. I presume that you’re representing your company?”

“Yes ma’am, I am. My company would like to offer you 50 billion dollars to buy out your company.”

Ann felt all of the men in the room turn their stare to her. 50 billion was a lot of money, but it was much less than what her company was worth. Besides, that was what she made in a year. There was no way that she was going to let her competition insult her in such a manner.

“No, I’m sorry. My company will not be accepting this offer. I’m sorry that you wasted your time coming down here for such a brief meeting.”

Ann got up to leave, but everybody else was still sitting down. She hadn’t even realized it, but Justin was laughing.

“I’m sorry, I missed what was funny. May I ask what you’re laughing at?” Ann implored.

“Well, Miss. Richard, I’m laughing at you, in all honesty. There is no way your business is going to last more than a year. I mean, can you imagine something more backward? A dating website being run by a woman who has never been married, let alone catch a date! It’s incredibly stupid for you to reject this offer. My company is offering you more than what your company is going to be worth in three months; I promise you. Why don’t you take the offer now and run with the money while you still can?”

Ann was furious. She had spent years building up this dating site, and it had been elected the number one most efficient dating site for three years in a row. There was no way possible that in three months, all of her hard work was going to be for nothing.

  Ju
stin had caused an uproar. Some of the men who worked for Ann pulled out their cellphones and started making phone calls while other men were shouting at each other from across the table. Ann buried her head in her hands as all the noise brought her back to the days of high school. Looking across the table, Ann saw Justin leaned back in his chair, smiling at the chaos he has just created.

“Enough!” Ann shouted at the men, incredibly overwhelmed with all of the noise.

“Justin, while I appreciate that your company is concerned with the success of my company, I am still going to refuse your company’s offer. As the founder of this business, I do not foresee any trouble in our near future that will lead to the end of my company. I thank you for your time. I will have someone escort you on your way out.”

Ann watched the good-looking man leave, and she dismissed all of her employees from the meeting.

  Chapter 3

After the meeting that she had just endured, Ann was furious. She was always one for competition, but verbally attacking your competition was just plain low. Massaging her temples, Ann’s thoughts faded to Jen. She hoped that Jen had gotten to her house and was safe. Ann reached for her phone to call Jen, but the battery flashed red, alerting Ann that it was soon going to die.

Angry beyond tears, Ann decided that she was going to treat herself tonight to a couple drinks at her favorite bar. Tucking away a few strands of stray hairs, Ann got up to check on her employees.

By the time the work day was done, Ann was exhausted. She contemplated even going to the bar. She knew that Jen needed her comforting. However, Ann also knew that she needed to relax a bit after the day she’d had.

Arriving at the bar, Ann walked in, and the bartender began to prepare her usual drink. She loved this bar; it was out of the city, and nobody knew who she really was or even cared for that matter. By the time she was seated, the bartender had placed a drink in front of her.

“Thank you,” Ann said with a blush on her face. Maybe she should be a bit more adventurous and go and try new places.

By her third drink, Ann had her head resting on the bar counter. She felt someone gently shake her, and she lifted her head up to see who would bother her. To her complete shock, it was Justin.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Ann pried with complete astonishment.

“I’m a regular here. Are you okay? You don’t look to good.”

Ann had never seen Justin ever, before today. She was unsure about the intentions of his interaction with her, but she was hoping that he didn’t think that he could actually lay his hands on her. Who was she kidding? If he hadn’t been so outlandish today, she would’ve let him. He was incredibly gorgeous, and he knew it.

Pulling up a seat next to Ann, Justin finished the last of his beer in one gulp.

“Look, I’m really sorry about today. I, in no way, shape, or form, truly think any of the things that I said to you today. My boss told me to be rude, just to try to knock you into shock, so you would accept the deal. He told me that men are always bending over backward for you, and I can see why ” Justin explained as he looked Ann up and down.

“Why are you telling me this? It’s not like I care about your opinion. Or you for that matter.” Ann regretted those words as soon as they came out. There was something about Justin that made her feel different inside, and she wanted to get to know him more.

“I figured it would provide you with some sort of comfort, knowing that I think that it’s actually going to be JFL that’s out of business in the next three months. And I’m not telling you this because I’m drunk. I’m not drunk for that matter. I just felt horrible leaving that impression on you, and I hope I didn’t hurt you too badly.”

Ann was surprised to see a squint in Justin’s eyes, almost as if he actually did have some concern for her. Justin got up to leave Ann alone, but she grabbed his wrist at the last second.

“Don’t leave,” Ann asked, surprised at her actions. She wasn’t thinking clearly, which was unlike her. She was able to handle her alcohol and easily drank her Irish friend under the table. It was something about Justin that had her brain all knotted up and working weird.

“Why not?” Justin inquired, searching Ann’s face for some type of emotion.

“I’m not insulted by you, but your boss was right. You did catch me off-guard. Today’s just been a rough day; that’s all.”

“Well, let me buy you a drink and we can toast to the success of your company.”

Ann nodded and stared at Justin while he ordered two more drinks. She then realized how incredibly built he was. Wearing just a baby blue t-shirt and jeans, Ann traced Justin’s muscular physique with her eyes. Justin turned his head back over and asked if she wanted anything to eat. Shaking her head, Ann began to worry about Jen again. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to remind herself that she had come to the bar to have a good time and not to stress herself out.

Before long, Justin had Ann laughing so hard that she was snorting. It had been a long time since Ann had been this happy and she was certainly enjoying spending time with Justin.

  Chapter 4

Ann rushed to type in the security code to her house as Justin placed kisses along the side of her neck. She could hardly remember the car ride to her house, but Justin had gotten her incredibly excited. As the front door opened, Ann released a small breath of relief as she saw Jen sleeping on the couch, with an empty pizza box on the table. Ann motioned for Justin to be quiet and pulled his hand towards her bedroom upstairs.

Justin pushed Ann down on her bed and lifted up her dress. He delved his face between her thighs, using his tongue to bring Ann sweet bliss. Clenching Justin’s hair, Ann let out a long moan. She has had sex before, but it had been a long time. Ann began to grind her hips against Justin’s face and began to breathe heavily. He stopped right before Ann climaxed, just to tease her for more. Justin climbed on top of Ann and began to kiss her neck. Justin moved to continue Ann’s pleasure, but she shook her head no.

“I don’t want to take things too fast. I don’t know if you’re going to be here in the morning when I wake up.”

“I completely understand,” Justin whispered as he picked Ann up. He placed Ann laying down at the head of her bed and snuggled in behind her, wrapping his muscular arms around her waist. He muzzled his face into her neck, and Ann felt at peace for once. She noticed how incredibly warm Justin was and drifted right off to sleep, with her fingers entangled in Justin’s body.

The next morning when Ann awoke, she found herself in an empty bed. Whispering a string of expletives together, Ann grew incredibly irritated at how reckless she had been. Walking into the bathroom, she found a dozen cheap roses on her bathroom counter with a note attached. I'm sorry I had to leave you this morning. The boss called for me to come in early. Call me when you wake up. 876 4430 - xoxo Justin

How cheesy was this? This was something that Ann had always seen in movies and never thought that any guy would actually do. Still irritated, Ann threw the flowers and the note away in her trash can. She wrapped her silk robe around her and headed downstairs.

While walking down stairs, Ann heard a conversation going on between two people. Running down the stairs, Ann found Jen and Justin sitting at her breakfast table.

Staring at Justin in disbelief, Ann immediately questioned Justin.

“What are you doing here? Don't bother my friend. Leave her alone. Are you okay, Jen?”

“Good morning to you too, Ann. I see you didn't get the flowers and note I left you.”

“I got them. But you left and didn't even wake me up. I wasn't going to call you.”

With a bit of hurt in his eyes, Justin got up and walked over to Ann.

“Last night wasn't a one and done for me. I don't just want to have sex with you, Ann. I want to get to know you better. I called in sick today so that I could take you out on a date,” Justin whispered to Ann.

Ann felt relieved to know that Justin was genuinely interested in her, j
ust as she was with him. It was a nice feeling to know that there could be some possibility of her with Justin, but she didn’t want to get too far ahead of herself.

Jen sat at the table silently crunching on some toast. The sound of her eating caught Ann’s attention, and she glanced at the table. The table was covered with a whole spread of food; chocolate chip pancakes, orange juice, bacon, toast, eggs, and fruit salad.

“What’s all this for? And where did you find all of this food?” Ann asked Justin, as he pulled out her chair.

“You, my dear. While you slept, I cooked you and your friend, Jen, some breakfast. You would still be stunning if you stacked on a few pounds,” Justin replied with a wink.

As Ann devoured what was on her plate, Justin began to think back to earlier that morning. His boss had called him in that morning to discuss Ann. Someone had seen Justin and Ann leaving the bar together and called Justin’s boss. His boss had waited for years for someone to get close to Ann. While he never respected Justin’s intelligence, Justin’s boss used last night’s interaction with Ann to finally plot his way to Ann’s demise.

He felt guilty for lying to Ann; he felt like she was generally a sweet girl, just misguided. A ring of a telephone interrupted his thoughts. Ann got up from the table to answer the phone. After a few minutes, she came back to the table, took a sip of coffee, and jogged upstairs.

“Where are you going?” Justin shouted to Ann as he began to clear up the mess from breakfast.

“I’ll be down in a few minutes!”

“I’ll be in the other room, looking for a new place to stay so I can get off of Ann’s couch. I feel so horrible being a freeloader. Thank you so much for fixing this delicious breakfast. I don’t know how long you and Ann have been together, but she’s lucky to have you in her life. She needs someone like you in her life, to help make sure she’s taking care of herself,” Jen said as she avoided eye contact with Justin, wringing her hands. She scurried out of the room before he could provide her with a response.
